My Layered Life is a guided workbook that turns your health, work, family and caring life into one reusable record, so every appointment, form and meeting starts from the full picture instead of from scratch.
You are trying to explain what support you need at work, but the conversation focuses on one condition. There is little room to explain how pain, poor sleep and caring responsibilities combine to make getting through the working day harder.
You leave a meeting about your child’s support at school and realise you never explained what happens at home afterwards: the exhaustion, distress or hours needed to recover that school staff do not see.
Another support application asks how everyday life is affected. You search through appointment letters, old emails and notes on your phone, trying to piece together the information about yourself or someone you care about, even though you have explained it all before.
I know how tiring this can be. I have lived a layered life myself and spent many years alongside people and families navigating health, education, work and support systems. Again and again, I have seen how much harder it becomes when a whole life has to be squeezed into separate boxes.
Real life rarely fits neatly into one box. Health, family, work, identity, responsibilities, environment and past experiences can all overlap and shape what life looks like today.
When those layers interact, a single label rarely explains the full impact. My Layered Life gives you a place to slow the process down, notice what is actually happening and build a clearer account in your own time.

My Layered Life guides you from scattered information and half-formed explanations to a clearer, reusable account of what is happening, how everyday life is affected, what makes things harder or easier, and what support may help. You create your own My Layered Life Working Document so you are not rebuilding your story every time.

The workbook follows the five elements of the Layered Lives Framework. You do not have to complete everything in one sitting or even in order. Each element helps you move from simply noticing what is happening to having words you can actually use.
Notice the layers shaping the situation rather than forcing everything into separate boxes. Use the My Layer Map to identify what matters now, what is interacting and what another person may need to understand.
02
Capture what life is actually like when different pressures meet. Describe what is difficult, exhausting, unsafe, unreliable or unsustainable, and notice patterns, variation, consequences and recovery.
Learn how to bring forward the relevant part of one truthful picture for different audiences. The facts stay the same; the focus changes depending on the decision or conversation in front of you.
Prepare for real conversations across work, education, healthcare, public support, charities and funders. Clarify the barrier, what might help, why it would help and the difference it could make.
04
Keep your Working Document alive as circumstances change. Record what is working, what needs review and what could make everyday life safer, more accessible or more sustainable.
06
Simple systems to stay on track when life gets messy (because it will).

Instead of constantly reacting, I finally have a rhythm that works for my family. I feel calmer and so much more in control.

My Layered Life is a practical self-help resource to help you gather, organise and communicate your circumstances, experiences and support needs. It is not medical, legal, financial or benefits advice and does not replace guidance from an appropriately qualified professional.
Bring your workbook and one real form, meeting, appointment or conversation you want to prepare for. In this 90-minute live online session, Shirley will guide you through identifying the relevant layers, describing everyday impact, noticing pattern and examples, and shaping what you need the other person to understand.
You can work privately in your own workbook. There is no expectation to disclose diagnoses, trauma or personal details to the group.
WHAT THE WORKSHOP HELPS YOU DO:
choose one real situation instead of trying to tackle everything at once
create or refine a Layer Map
turn rough notes into a clearer description of everyday impact
add frequency, variation, consequences and a useful real example
identify the barrier, what might help and the difference it could make
prepare a first clear explanation or set of notes for the conversation in front of them
founder of Layered Lives. I have lived a layered life myself and spent more than 20 years working alongside people navigating disability, health, education, work and support systems. I have seen how often a person can know their own life deeply and still struggle to fit that reality into the questions they are being asked.
I created My Layered Life because people deserve a way to hold the whole picture before they are asked to reduce it to a form, appointment or application. My aim is not to give people a perfect script. It is to help them understand what is happening, recognise what matters, and find language that feels truthful, relevant and easier for someone else to understand.
Layered Lives is built on a simple belief: everyone has layers. Some are visible. Some are hidden. All influence how we experience the world.

Create one living record of the fuller picture. Use it to understand your needs, capture the examples that matter and choose the relevant words whenever another conversation, form, appointment or decision comes along.
It is for people who need help understanding and explaining a complex situation, whether they are doing that for themselves or directly supporting a child, partner, parent, family member or someone in their care. If more than one person needs support, the workbook recommends creating a separate Working Document for each person.
No. You can record what is happening even if a diagnosis, referral, assessment or investigation is still in progress. The workbook helps you distinguish between what is confirmed and what is still being explored. Where a particular system requires formal evidence, your own notes do not replace that evidence.
No. The workbook can help with healthcare, education, workplace support, social care, disability-related financial or practical support, charity or grant applications, housing/community conversations, meetings, reviews, emails and appeals. You choose the parts that are relevant to the situation in front of you.
No. My Layered Life is not a scheme-specific eligibility guide. Different systems use different criteria and those rules can change. The workbook helps you organise and communicate your own circumstances more clearly, then reminds you to check the current official guidance for the particular decision you are preparing for.
No. Clear information can help another person understand your circumstances, but wording alone cannot create eligibility or guarantee a particular outcome. Equally, a refusal does not mean that your needs are not real or that you necessarily explained yourself badly.
Absolutely not. The workbook is intentionally designed to be used at your own pace and not necessarily in order. Use the sections that help now, leave others for later, and come back as your circumstances change.
It is a digital workbook. You can use the prompts alongside a Word document, Google Doc, digital notebook or paper system, and you may print and adapt the worksheet pages for your own personal use. The workbook helps you decide which approach creates the least friction for you.
Yes, when you are directly supporting a family member or someone in your care. Keep the person’s own perspective, privacy and choices at the centre of what you record and share. The workbook is not licensed for redistribution or use within a service, programme or organisation without written permission.
Yes. This is the International Edition and the core process is designed to be useful across different systems. Names, forms, terminology and eligibility rules vary, so always check the current guidance that applies where you live.
