About Layered Lives

About Layered Lives

Layered Lives began with a simple observation:

Every person carries layers.

Some are visible.

Some are hidden.

All influence how we experience the world.

Health conditions, disability, neurodivergence, grief, trauma, caring responsibilities, work, relationships, identity, culture, faith, purpose and countless other experiences shape our lives in ways that are often more complex than they first appear.

Yet many systems, services and conversations still focus on only one part of a person's story.

Layered Lives exists to help create a world where complexity is understood rather than judged.

We believe people are not problems to be solved. They are whole human beings to be understood.

About the Founder

Layered Lives was founded by Shirley Appleby, a writer, speaker and trainer with more than two decades of experience supporting people with disabilities, long term health conditions, neurodivergence and other complex, overlapping experiences.

Her work brings together professional expertise, lived experience and a deep belief in the power of understanding to create lasting change.

Real People. Real Stories. Lasting Change.

Layered Lives was not born from a business idea.

It was born from a lifetime of living alongside complexity.

Growing up, I was surrounded by people carrying layers that few others could see or understand. Mental health challenges, addiction, trauma, grief, disability, family conflict, loss, and caring responsibilities were not concepts I studied. They were part of everyday life.

Looking back, I can see that every person around me was far more than the labels attached to them. From a young age, I learned that beneath every behaviour was a human being who wanted to be seen, heard, understood, and loved.

Long before I had any professional training, I found myself helping people make sense of difficult situations. For reasons I could not explain at the time, I often became a calming presence in the middle of chaos.

That pattern followed me throughout my life.

Whether I was working in care, disability services, education, wellbeing, or coaching, the thread remained the same. I was helping people navigate complicated lives.

At the same time, I continued to live a layered life myself.

Over three generations, my family has experienced many of the experiences that can shape a life, including illness, disability, neurodivergence, trauma, grief, loss, and caring responsibilities. Yet what I witnessed was not just struggle.

I witnessed growth.

I witnessed courage.

I witnessed people making different choices.

I witnessed generational patterns beginning to change.

Over time, I realised that the people who thrive are not necessarily those with the fewest challenges. They are often the people who understand their layers, learn how those layers interact, and discover practical ways to support themselves.

That realisation became Layered Lives.

Layered Lives exists because nobody should feel that they are too much, too complicated, or too broken to be understood.

It exists to remind people that they are not alone.

It exists to offer practical knowledge, tools, and hope.

Not because life becomes easy.

But because there is almost always something that can be done.

A choice.

A strategy.

A conversation.

A source of support.

A next step.

My hope is that Layered Lives helps people understand that they are more than any single diagnosis, circumstance, or challenge they carry.

Many layers. One life. Infinite worth.

The Layered Lives Framework

The Layered Lives Framework helps people understand complexity.

It provides a way of recognising the many factors that shape a person's experience and exploring how those layers interact with one another.

The Framework holds five elements: See, Understand, Adapt, Connect and Thrive. Together, they help us notice what is shaping a life, understand how the layers interact, adapt in ways that make life more workable, connect with the people and support that help us flourish, and move towards thriving on our own terms.

The framework can be applied by:

• Individuals

• Families

• Professionals

• Organisations

• Communities

By understanding the layers, we can create more compassionate, inclusive and sustainable ways of living, supporting and working together.

The Layered Lives Method

If the Framework helps us understand complexity, the Method helps us work with it.

The Method takes the Framework's five elements and turns them into a practice: five honest questions we can return to again and again, in whatever order life currently calls for.

What is shaping this experience?

How do these layers influence one another?

What helps this life become more workable?

Who and what helps people flourish?

What becomes possible when people feel understood?

It is not a straight line from one step to the next. It is a guided journey, one a person, a family, a professional or an organisation can return to, again and again, for as long as life keeps changing.

Our Vision

We envision a world where people feel seen, understood and valued in the fullness of their lives.

A world where complexity is not something to hide.

A world where support is built around real people and real experiences.
